Railways and sea bathing: the same popular success at the end of the 19th century! Thanks to the Compagnie des Charentes, Châtelaillon became the first seaside resort in the département to welcome holidaymakers to its quayside. The year was 1897 and the Rochefort-La Rochelle line was officially born.
Châtelaillon, once a landscape of dunes, now welcomed more than 70,000 bathers and became the favourite spot for the local bourgeoisie.
Before getting off, make sure you haven’t forgotten anything on board!

Panoramic view of the islands and Fort Boyard

beach-family-velo-conteursYour bike ride from Châtelaillon continues along the coast, with breathtaking views of the Pointe de Fouras, the Ile d’Aix, the Ile d’Oléron and the Ile de Ré! Get out your binoculars: you can see the silhouette of the famous Fort Boyard. Wait a minute, isn’t that Passe-Partout over there?
Good to know: Fort Boyard hasn’t always been the cult site that challenges adventurers. It was once used to protect the harbour and defend the Rochefort Arsenal.
A snack break for everyone! The helmets come off, and it’s time to recharge your batteries with some delicious caramels with fleur de sel from the Île de Ré. A 100% local treat.

The port of Loiron

Say Ziclou, where are we going? After a quick look at the app, head for Port du Loiron. This little cove is a real haven of peace on your route. With its charming oyster huts, secluded beach and watercolour-like light, the Port du Loiron is Angoulins’ best-kept secret. Take a stroll, contemplate and enjoy the peace and quiet before setting off again on the Poï’z trail.

La Pointe de la Belette

A not-to-be-missed diversions to discover the carrelets along the Charente coastline. Les carrelets? These are tall fishing huts equipped with a wide net that juts out over the foreshore. They are ideal for catching sea bass, sole and eels. Your bike ride from Châtelaillon will never cease to amaze you…

Saint-Pierre Church

After passing through the marshes, your Terra Aventura escapade will take you to the foot of Saint-Pierre d’Angoulins church, the oldest parts of which date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Romanesque windows, fortified chevet and machicolations: keep your eyes peeled for your next clue!
