Sainte-Madeleine Church in Châtelaillon-Plage
Built at the end of the 19th century, the church of Sainte-Madeleine is an emblematic monument of the resort, its architecture inspired by Romanesque art. Originally a simple chapel, it has been extended over the decades to accommodate a growing number of worshippers and visitors.
The monumental fresco by Amaury Dubois (2020)
In 2020, artist Amaury Dubois transformed the vault and choir into an ocean of colour with a 600 m² fresco. Commissioned as part of a restoration project initiated by Jean-Louis Léonard, Mayor of Châtelaillon-Plage from 1984 to 2020, this fresco is a true artistic and technical feat.
Inspired by fish scales, a Christian symbol, and the waves of the ocean, this work pays tribute to the maritime identity of Châtelaillon-Plage. Completed in just two and a half months, it is one of the largest creations of contemporary sacred art in France, offering a unique visual experience.
This fresco is now one of the largest works of contemporary sacred art in France, offering visitors a unique experience, whether they are believers or simply art lovers.
